With Sharpe at Ahmednuggur: a 15mm Wellesley in India Game

Another new game hit the tabletop finally this year.  I’ve been slowly collecting and building a force of Highlanders, Sepoys, Mahrattas and terrain to recreate the inspiring escalade of the Pittah at Ahmednuggur in 1803.  This is Wellesley bold first move in the Second Mahratta War as depicted in Sharpe’s Triumph.

Details of the battle dispositions were gleaned from the Sharpe Companion:  The Early Years by Mark Adkin.  Great Stuff!

The fortress was by Crescent Root, the figures were from a variety of manufacturers, Old Glory, Minifigs, Black Hat, Frei Korps, and Battle Honors.  The Highlanders were gleaned from leftovers from Penninsular and 100 days collections in 15mm which I’ve been collecting for almost 30 years.  A separate post on the armies involved and the uniforms may be in order if anyone is gaming this period or interested.

As for rules, I used the Battles for Empire 2 rules for the first go – they are a favorite mine for colonial battles, and at its essence this was an early colonial battle.   I’ve posted the game QRS on the Battles for Empire 2 Yahoo Group page, so please consider heading over there and looking at the rules.

In the end, the British did just make it over the wall, Dodd withdrew, and the game concluded with the charge of the light dragoons into the fortress, putting an end to the Arab mercenaries who were perhaps the stoutest defenders.  We had six players including one of my sons and a nephew – really sophisticated gamers,   and I think everyone had a good time.
