Les Invalides – Louis’ relief maps

I used to work quite a bit in Paris twenty years ago, and cant believe I never made a trip to the Musee de le Armee. We stopped there with only a couple of hours time and were stunned by the scale of the collection – particularly the Napoleonic originals – even the Emperor’s horse!!!
One thing \nwhich is tucked away on the very top floor is a low light room in which is a stunning collection of 3d relief maps of French fortresses around the world.
Most of these are now more than 300 years old but lovingly preserved – really amazing.
Zoom in on the photos and you can see the tremendous level of detail – all of this before a camera existed to create photos to work from.
Many of the models are accompanied by photos of the actual fortresses.
There are many other amazing features of the museum, but this was simply amazing and highly recommended
